NEAC Provides Provincial Match

TAP Trainings in DC, Atlanta, Chicago

Three train-the-trainer programs supported by the national church under General Convention Resolution A002a to train leaders in presenting the Episcopal Guide to Teens for AIDS Prevention curriculum will be held in three provinces by June.

The Province III training event, co-sponsored by a grant from Metropolitan Life through the AIDS National Interfaith Network, the Episcopal Church and the Church of the Ascension, Gaithersburg, MD, will be held on April 25–27. The training will be held at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD. Up to 100 persons may attend the program. Dioceses and parishes are requested to send a team of two youth (male and female) and two adults to ensure the most effective training team. The Episcopal Caring Response to AIDS (ECRA) is the host of the event. Participants may register by calling 202-347-8077.

Province IV training will be held at All Saints Church, Atlanta on June 7–9. Guests will stay at the Renaissance Center Hotel in Atlanta, across the street from the Church. The AIDS Task Force of the Diocese of Atlanta is hosting the event. Registrations may be obtained by writing the AIDS Task Force at Diocese of Atlanta, PO Box 1151, Atlanta, GA 30301. Coordinator for the event is Bruce Garner, chair of the Task Force. The training event is being sponsored by Province IV, the Episcopal Church and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Province V training was held at Diocesan House in Chicago on March 7–9, and was hosted by the AIDS Task Force of the Diocese of Chicago. Stephen Montgomery was coordinator for the training. Participants were guests at the Allerton Hotel, in downtown Chicago.

The Province V Training event was co-sponsored by Province V, Episcopal Church, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Training events have also been held in Provinces VIII and VI since the beginning of the triennium. Under the resolution, the Episcopal Church will match funds for hosting the training event through the province. The National Episcopal AIDS Coalition has raised more than $20,000 from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and through the AIDS National Interfaith Network from the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company to host the training events. NEAC has not received any financial support for coordinating the training.

Members of the Executive Council’s Commission on HIV/AIDS meet in Dallas. During the Saturday morning session, members from AIDS ministries in Dallas and across Texas share their stories of frustration, hope and service. The meeting was held at the Church of the Transfiguration Episcopal School.

The training events are also supported by Advocates for Youth. AYO created the original TAP training as a secular AIDS prevention curriculum. Initial support for the program came from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Episcopal Guide was developed by AIDS Ministries in the Diocese of Connecticut and was field tested for five years before being redesigned for the Episcopal Church curriculum. In 1994, the General Convention approved a resolution calling for expanded usage of the TAP curriculum utilizing the matching funds approach for training. Since that time, training has been held in Provinces VIII, IV and I.
