TAP Training Proceeds in Province VI — Colorado

CDC grant provides support

Over thirty youth and adults gathered in Boulder, CO, on the first weekend of November for the first train the trainer program in the use of the Episcopal Guide to Teens for AIDS Prevention curriculum. The training was held at St. John’s Episcopal Church under the direction of Kent Klindera, MPH, Advocates for Youth, Washington, DC and The Reverend Altagracia Perez, rector of St. Phillip the Evangelist Church, Los Angeles, CA, and a member of the President’s National AIDS Advisory Council.

Those trained came from Iowa, Colorado, and South Dakota, and included United Methodists and Roman Catholics. As a result of the two-day training event, more than 200 migrant farm workers were trained in Iowa two weeks after the initial training.

Representing the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was Carrie Hartshorne, project officer for the NEAC conference event. Last year, NEAC applied for and received a $16,000 grant from CDC to hold three identical conferences in which the TAP training would be utilized. NEAC raised these funds to achieve the dollar-for-dollar match from the Episcopal Church to hold TAP training events. Provinces VI, V, IV have requested funds for this match through NEAC.

According to Jane Wilson, a member of the Diocese of Colorado Task Force on AIDS/HIV, “We recommended this training to the whole Church. We invite any diocese or task force to contact us about our satisfaction and success with this event. It has been an enriching experience for all of us.”
