NEAC: We Are Not Alone
by The Rev. C. William Frampton, III
Dear Friends,
Sometimes it seems like I’m the only one in the world that must deal with the trials and circumstances of this crazed thing we call “life.” It’s helpful—even therapeutic—to know that I’m not alone and that there are indeed others facing the same kinds of situations and dilemmas that I face. Being alone is not good. Finding others who can empathize helps to remove the isolation.
Those of us involved in HIV/AIDS ministry often forget that we are not alone in the struggle to help, support, and care for those infected and affected by this disease. Of course we know that there are state and federal agencies that perform HIV/AIDS services. But what makes our efforts different is that we are answering our Lord’s call to minister. Ministry is far different than service.
In ministering to those who are affected and infected, we take seriously the responsibility of heeding the call to “Love one another as I have loved you.” As people of faith we derive our strength, our commitment, and our “call to ministry” directly from the words of Jesus. He in fact has given us the reason to do what we do.
Even when others may not understand or when they ridicule us, we can take great comfort in knowing that there are others who are equally as committed to this ministry and are prayerfully supporting us in the work that we do.
NEAC is part of the Council of National Religious AIDS Networks, of which I am proud to be co-chair of the Executive Committee. As Episcopalians on a daily basis we are answering the call to minister; so are Presbyterians, Methodists, Roman Catholics, Buddhists, Lutherans, the United Church of Christ, and many others. I ask you to pray for the work of all these organizations, which like NEAC are committed to serving Christ in every person.
We are not alone: Through the efforts of thousands and thousands of caring members of religions worldwide, persons with HIV/AIDS have been served, loved, and cared for. As Christians, we are called to serve. As people of faith, we are called to this ministry. May God bless you in your ministry, this day and forever more.
Peace.
