1999 Kanuga Conference Set
“Resurrection of the Body: New Life with HIV/AIDS” is the theme for the eighth annual retreat for persons affected by HIV/AIDS, scheduled for June 11–13 at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, NC.
Leading the retreat will be the Rev. Lisa Hunt, rector of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Nashville, TN. She is a founding member of the Nashville Interfaith AIDS Task Force, a member of the Diocese of Tennessee working group on AIDS, a founding leader of Integrity Middle Tennessee, and pastor to a congregation which services a variety of persons affected by HIV/AIDS. She, her family, and her congregation, are currently working to recover from the destruction of the church in a tornado in April 1998.
“Our experience with HIV/AIDS has caused us to struggle with our concept of body and soul,” she writes. “We have lived through a time when a diagnosis of HIV meant certain impending death.” Now, with the new wave of drugs, “we have renewed hope of life in our bodies, the possibility that life will go on in our flesh.”
“This retreat will focus on the tension with which we live in our flesh. How do we identify with our bodies? What is our hope for ourselves? What might resurrection mean for my flesh.”
“We will also consider how the state of our bodies connects us with others. The purpose will be to have a renewed sense of hope and a reclamation of the flesh as a means of God’s presence in our lives.”
The retreat will begin with dinner on Friday, June 11, and end after lunch on Sunday, June 13. Kate Lawless will be the musician in residence.
The fee for the Kanuga conference, $145, has not been raised since the series began. Fore more information, call Ray Clark, (828) 658-3846.
