Triennial Report: Seven Goals
1. Help heal racism through examining the impact of HIV/AIDS on communities of color, clarifying the roles of racism in AIDS.
Response: The goal was included in our on-going efforts and specifically through attending the Standing Committee on HIV/AIDS hearings held in Atlanta, Miami, Indianapolis, Seattle, San Pedro Sula, and the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming.
2. Create strategies for NEAC’s role in spiritual and practical support of the network of AIDS ministries in our Church.
Response: Forward in Faith: celebrating the past, Building the Future-the NEAC Conference held in San Francisco, March 23-25, 2000. The NEAC web page continues to be a reference and in the past few months we have been making greater efforts at keeping it current and responding in a timely manner.
3. Inform the Church of changes in AIDS ministry in the coming Triennium due to hope in the country, and the expanding tragedy in the developing world.
Response: This is an on-going effort through articles in the NEACtion, through individual board members in their communities and dioceses and through the Report to Convention from the Standing Committee on HIV/AIDS
4. Inform the Church of changes in AIDS ministry/care and call upon every congregation, diocese, province and agency of the Episcopal Church to find and accept its role in responding to the HIV epidemic.
Response: 4.a. Call to Prayer on HIV/AIDS was issued by the Presiding Bishop and there is an on-going effort to collect liturgical and programmatic resources. 4.b. NEAC will offer a compelling witness to the Church at the General Convention 2000. 4.c. The Forward In Faith Conference in San Francisco, March 2000 will offer workshops, keynote speakers, worship and opportunities for networking. Additionally, the Conference will offer an opportunity to honoring NEAC’s 14 years of ministry and service.
5. Identify, develop and facilitate resources that support Christian responses to the need for compassion, accurate and spiritually-sound prevention education and justice in the midst of AIDS.
Response: These are done through the web site, TAP training and the soon-to-be- published revised and updated Sunday School Curriculum (fall 2000).
6. Refine NEAC’s role in HIV/AIDS public policy issues including support of the Washington Office of the Episcopal Church and it’s Public Policy Network.
Response: NEAC has received the membership list as supplied by the Public Policy Network. It is hoped that after refining the list that it can be used as a means of soliciting new members. NEAC supports funding for the Episcopal church membership in National Organization Responding to AIDS, in an effort to help the Public Policy Network receive timely notice of HIV/AIDS public policy issues.
7. Refine the NEAC vision of leadership by empowering its diverse and geographically dispersed Board to promote HIV/AIDS action and activism in the Church.
Response: There is an on-going effort to get all Board members on-line to enable better communication in an on-going basis. “Check-in” at the start of our occasional meetings helps us to share what is going on in our personal lives, but also in our HIV/AIDS ministries; because we come from quite disparate areas-there is much to learn.
