National Committee Meets in Austin

The main item on the agenda of the Standing Committee on HIV/AIDS met during the New Directions conference in Austin was prevention education. Discussing a proposal from the national office of the Episcopal Church for an alternative to the youth curriculum prepared by NEAC on A Christian Response to HIV/AIDS, the committee passed the following motion:

That the HIV/AIDS Committee notify the National Church office that the alternative curriculum proposed to replace A Christian Response to HIV/AIDS, which was written to present prevention education to youth in the church, is inadequate as a Christian response to AIDS and also inadequate as a response to recent resolutions passed and sent on from National Conventions.

The Blue Book Report of the committee and resolutions for the National Convention in 2001 have been submitted. The Report will be posted on the NEAC website.

The committee is also recommending that appointments to it be made for a period of six years rather than three, to assure continuity of its work.
