Many Don’t Know They Are HIV-Positive

In a recent CDC study in six cities of more than 5,600 men aged 15 to 29 who have sex with men, more than 10% were found to be HIV-positive, but more than three-quarters (77%) were not aware of it. Of the 439 men who were not aware they were HIV-positive, 59% thought they were at low risk, yet 51% reported having unprotected anal sex with another man during the previous six months. More than half the 439 men had not been tested in the previous year. Though the researchers recognized the findings might not be reflective of the larger MSM population because they were recruited from bars, parks, cafes, stores, and similar venues, CDC epidemiologist Duncan MacKellar said the study underscores the urgency of increased HIV testing among MSM. He and his colleagues suggested expanding HIV testing services at clubs and bars, and also recommended that doctors recommend routine HIV testing for patients at risk.
